Engaging staff/faculty and students in SoTL

“The aim in SoTL is not to publish but to uncover the complexity of academic practice through reflection and engagement with relevant partners (colleagues, students) and to draw lessons that are subjected to debate and contradiction. Change emerges from inquiry” - Fanghanel, (2013)

This session follows on from the Developing SoTL workshop.  The argument is that the best way to motivate staff/faculty and students to engage in SoTL is to appeal to their desire to enhance the quality of teaching through inquiry. The session will include a discussion of how to engage with SoTL through identifying and responding to what are variously referred to in the literature as ‘bottlenecks’ to student learning and ‘troublesome knowledge’. A set of mini-case studies of initiatives form around the world to engage students in SoTL will be examined. The session will focus on participants planning their own SoTL project.

Comments

“Mick and Ruth are excellent facilitators who complemented each other perfectly in giving a workshop about Students as Partners in SoTL. They gave an interactive and very inspiring online workshop that provided lots of opportunities for the participants to ask questions and get actively involved in discussions with them and with each other. We were also very impressed by the thorough way they prepared themselves for the workshop, adjusting it to the local context and our wishes.”
